Found this relict in an old box recently and thought it worthy of a post.
Back in the pre iPod 80s if you wanted mobile music the Sony Walkman was the answer. But if you wanted to ski where the odd wipeout was routine a plastic cased Walkman would not survive long. So I bought this aluminium clad JVC cassette player instead and as you can see it’s in remarkably good shape after that decade of trips to the alps.
Sound quality at the time was really rather good. It has automatic noise reduction (Dolby) with an output stage that could provide decent volume to pre ear bud headphones. With a 6v supply from 4 AA cells the analogue amplifiers had plenty of headroom to drive even low sensitivity phones. The extra weight was worth it and it could run all morning on a set of rechargeable batteries.
Wow and flutter from the belt drive was reasonably low when put through tight turns and bumps on and off piste. Now the belt has stretched and it needs replacing which is covered in another post. It came with a dark blue protective soft plastic padded case that helped absorb the knocks.

These were great back in thw day think still have my one o in my parents loft…..needs a belt

They are still very good to listen to. Compare with compressed MP3 or DAB radio music and you can hear the difference! Worth getting it down from the loft – the extremes of cold and hot temperatures in a loft won’t treat the JVC or any equipment very well. Find a belt on eBay, see this post on how to change it – https://storycase.co.uk/radio/tape-recorder/jvc-cassette-player-cq-1k-belt-change/ or look on Youtube.

There was an associated blue carry case with a strap as well (plastic I think but vaguely faux leatherish). The teenage band I was in took one down to Portland Place to doorstep BBC Radio DJ John Peel with a copy of our demo – we caught him emerging from the main building and he generously popped the headphones on and listened to the cassette while he went to visit the BBC library. Came back and gave us some constructive advice even though the demo was pretty dodgy 🙂 I believe we were the first band to spring a walkman-with-demo on him, but not the last.

Ha, yes you are right! I still have the dark blue case with a maroon velvet style lining. Even has Made in Japan stamped on the back although the silver JVC and ANRS Dolby logos are well warn. The strap long since detached from ski trips. Good try with John Peel, it was a nice weighty player so must have helped him think the demo was worth listening to. What was the name of your band I wonder?
