THUNDERBIRDS TAPE RECORDER / DECK BENKSON 68 CRYSTAL MIC
Here is a very rare miniature tape recorder made in Japan in the sixties by Benkson – model HR-408A. Google Thunderbirds tape recorder images to see the model in Thunderbirds 5 as it appeared in the classic Gerry Anderson’s series. The deck uses standard ¼ inch tape on 3 inch reels powered by two 1.5v C cells and a 9v PP3 for the audio.
The tape deck functions on play and record and audio can be heard on playback from the internal speaker.
Also a period Japanese sixties lapel crystal microphone similar to original. As a collectable it would make an excellent prop to recreate the interior of the Thunderbirds 5 or Brains’ lab.
The battery clips that retain the cells have some rust but does not affect operation as the contacts have no corrosion and the battery cover is present. Also the darker brown plastic deck base has some cracks as does the volume knob and there are some pit marks to the bright chrome face plate but otherwise in good condition for the age.
The original top cover is undamaged along with the strap – both of which can be easily removed as used in the Thunderbirds set. Size approx: 20cm wide, 7cm high, 16cm deep. Weighs 1.1 Kg.

Just seen your post George and brought back memories – my Benkson was also bought by my father in the sixties but never knew where he found it. Did you find the receipt with the price on as that sounds a very good memory!

Hi Kate – sorry to hear about your uncle. Value really depends on condition and popularity of Thunderbirds and Gerry Anderson fans! A few years ago I sold one for around £100 when the TV series was showing. A Homey version with some corrosion sold recently for £30 on eBay. You may want to check eBay for completed listings to get an idea – try Thunderbirds tape recorder or Benkson or Homey tape recorder.
